Thierry Balzacq is a Francqui Research Chair (Belgium’s most prestigious academic title) at the University of Namur and Visiting Professor at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). He was formerly the Scientific Director of the Institute for Strategic Research (IRSEM), the French Ministry of Defense’s research center (2014-2016).
Balzacq holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge. A former Postdoctoral Fellow at Harvard, Balzacq held a Honorary Professorial Fellowship at the University of Edinburgh, where he was also Fellow for “outstanding research” at the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities. In 2015, he was awarded a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Diplomacy and International Security (valued at CAD $200,000 per year). “Tier 1 Chairs are for outstanding researchers acknowledged by their peers as world leaders in their fields.” Balzacq has published over 100 papers on security, securitization theory, IR Theory, and EU politics. He has given more than 150 presentations.
Balzacq is co-leading The Global Initiative on Comparative Grand Strategy (GICGS) with Peter Dombrowski (US Naval War College) and Simon Reich (Rutgers).
